RIVE DROITE, RIVE GAUCHE :
Magdalenian Occupations at Étiolles (Essonne)

Abstract

An archaeological evaluation carried out in 2004, in the immediate vicinity of the magdalenian site of Étiolles-Les Coudray, has brought to light an extension of the prehistoric levels on left bank of the Hauldres brook. More or less dense concentrations of flint and isolated pieces were found in five of the ten trial trenches. In trench 1, an organized level with a probable hearth spread over about 20 m² was discovered. The geomorphological study made it possible to locate an old bank of the brook on which this magdalenian occupation was found. The lithic assemblage is composed of more than a thousand pieces most of which have acquired a patina. The debitage is primarily laminar and presents technical similarities with that of Étiolles-Les Coudray (debitage starting from a single platform, with butts), but has also some specificities (smaller blocks, laminar surface without carination, use of a second opposite striking platform with a different orientation on some nuclei…). In the absence of an absolute date, it is not possible to date this level in the periode of the Étiolles settlement phase.
