THE MEDIEVAL CHURCH AT CHENOU (SEINE-ET-MARNE):
from an 10th-11th-century occupation to a 16th-century bell foundry

Abstract

The restoration of the church at Chenou has led to a study of the building and the digging of trial trenches. A feature dating to the 10th-11th-centuries and a 16th-century bell foundry were found. The first feature is difficult to interpret, lime kiln or storage pit? The carpological and anthracological studies evoke several hypotheses. The foundry is well preserved, it includes the base of a bell mould and the foundations of the furnace. The remains also attest to the casting of two bells, confirmed by the composition of the metal fragments, whereas the gable of the church can only accommodate one.
