MEDIEVAL CASTLE SITES IN LUZARCHES (VAL-D’OISE):
state of knowledge and new lines of research following trial excavation
on the Manoir de la Motte - rue François de Ganay site

Abstract

Trial excavation on the Château de la Motte site in 2019 justified a rereading of available archaeological and historical data concerning Luzarches. Acquiring a fuller understanding of the town’s dual-centred layout, strongly influenced by the presence of two contemporary castles, has led to renewed questioning of the role played by the two elite and religious poles in the settlement’s development. Field work has also enabled full topographic recording of the feudal mound and the Philip Augustus period castle. The newly acquired data paves the way for a revival of castle studies in the Val-d’Oise.
