Abstract

Creation in 1986 of the Marne-la-Vallée Val d’Europe new town and the Disneyland Paris theme park generated the first developer-led excavations in the area. Over the last 40 years, large-scale archaeological operations have subsequently revealed more than a hundred sites covering periods from the Palaeolithic to the Contemporary past. As a result, the Marne-la-Vallée territory is unparalleled within the Île-de-France, or even European, archaeological landscape, with research enabling both an extensive and diachronic understanding of human settlement and a precise perception of the customs and practices of the first occupants.
