THE LUXEMBOURG GARDEN (PARIS) DURING THE ROMAN PERIOD:
The 1985 underground car-park excavations

IC GALLO FR

Abstract

Remains of Lutetia discovered in the Luxembourg Garden in 1985 comprised dwellings, bath-house, wells and artefacts dating from the Early Roman Empire. Excavations were carried out under rescue conditions and no report was published at the time. Recently, it has been possible to reexamine the assembled data, publish the excavations and propose an outline for the urbanisation and chronology of this quarter located at the heart of Lutetia whilst on its limits. This paper also provides an opportunity to review the chronology of the very numerous archaeological observations made in the Garden since the 17th century and to inventory the uneven and disparate documentation associated.
