PARIS EN CHANTIERS (1841-2024)
Directed by Émilie CAVANNA and Paul CELLY (†)
The present volume of the Revue archéologique d’Île-de-France pays tribute to Paul Celly (1965-2023), a leading figure in recent Parisian archaeology, and takes stock of almost two centuries of research in the capital. From the pioneering work of Théodore Vacquer, indefatigable observer of Haussmann’s renovations, to the digital archaeological mapping resulting from the R&CAP project, the present-day renewal of archaeology in Paris is illustrated by selected on-going or completed research.
The assembled contributions investigate the sources, methods and tools employed in documenting the Parisian subsurface. Several discuss the in-put of digital technologies in the mapping of remains and the modelling of historic layers, or the recent history of collections management. New data or a fresh approach allow re-examination of known sites such as the rue Racine Roman Theatre, the Luxembourg Garden Merovingian pottery workshops, the early medieval cathedrals on the Ile de la Cité, the Les Billettes convent or the Saint Marcel quarry village. Hitherto unpublished, these case studies serve current reflection on the long-term development of the urban fabric.
Calling upon the key actors of research (DHAAP, Inrap, SRA, CNRS, universities), the present volume demonstrates the vitality and complexity of urban archaeology in Paris, its resolutely interdisciplinary nature and its intimate link with the city’s past and present transformations.
