Emmanuelle du BOUËTIEZ de KERORGUEN, Xavier PEIXOTO AN AUGUSTAN PERIOD POTTERY WORKSHOP: |
Abstract
In 2017, development-led excavation at 3-3ter rue Laugier in Argenteuil (Val-d’Oise) revealed remains of an Augustan period (27 BC to 14 AD) pottery workshop. The kiln, comprising a single chamber, raised floor and two opposing stoke-holes, is of a type well known in northern Gaul but hitherto rarely documented in the Île-de-France. The period of use makes it one of the oldest known for the region. The kiln is the first to be found producing the black-surfaced reddish ware pottery ("NPR") emblematic of the Parisii tribe. The extent of the workshop, located close to a stream and a road in a rural or outlying urban context, remains unknown. Activity on the site continued throughout the 1st century AD.
